Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur was established in 1959 as one of the premier institutions of India. The main aim of the Institute is to provide meaningful education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation. Currently there are 3928 undergraduate students and 2540 graduate students. 

From its very inception, IIT Kanpur has been striving to develop itself into an institution of excellence in education and research in consonance with the contemporary and future needs of India. The Kanpur Indo-American Programme (1962-1972) at IIT-Kanpur was a stride in this direction. During the period 1962-72, the Institute received technical assistance under KIAP from a consortium of nine leading Institutions of U.S.A. Under the program, faculty members from these Institutions assisted the Institute in the setting up of the academic programs and development of laboratories for instruction as well as research.
The objectives of the academic programmes at IIT Kanpur are:
  • to provide the highest level of education in technology and science
  • to produce competent, creative and imaginative engineers, scientists and designers
  • to promote a spirit of free and objective enquiry in different fields of knowledge
  • to foster inter-disciplinary approaches and inter-departmental involvement in the educational programme by bringing together faculty and students
  • to promote contact with, and be of service to industries, government and civic organisations, through research efforts, consultations, conferences and short-term intensive courses on current developments in technology, science and design
  • to make a significant contribution towards the development of skilled technical, design and management manpower
  • to create an intellectual reservoir to meet the growing demands of the nation.

Academic Programs in IIT Kanpur

In addition to offering formal Undergraduate and Post-graduate Programs, the Institute has been involved in Continuing Education and Research & Development in areas of value to both the Industry and the Government. In a very short span, the Institute has attained recognition as a major centre of learning in Engineering, Science and several Inter-disciplinary areas. 

B. Tech., B. Tech. - M. Tech. (Dual Degree) & Integrated M. Sc. Programmes

Admission to these programmes is made once a year in July through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced conducted on an All India level in April/May.

M. Sc. (2-year) and M. Sc. - Ph. D. (Dual Degree) Programme

Admission is made once a year through an All India level examination known as 'Joint Admission Test to M. Sc. (JAM)

M. B. A. Programme

IIT Kanpur has introduced MBA programme to further its excellence in engineering and science education. 
Advertisement is released in the middle of April. A candidate is required to take Common Admission Test (CAT).

M. Des. Programme 

To meet the new challenge of design - related professions, a comprehensive and formal training through a curriculum is the need of the day. There is a growing demand for specially trained graduates in the field of Design for the national and international industries. A valid GATE or CEED is required for admission.

D.I.I.T. Programme 

Only candidates sponsored by recognised Industries are eligible for this programme of two semesters. The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in Engineering or Master's degree in Science.

M. Tech. Programme  

Admission to M. Tech. programmes is normally made twice a year, once in July and again in December. Advertisement is released in March/April and September respectively. For eligibility to the M Tech programme, one is required to have passed the qualifying examination, i.e., B. Tech./B. E. or M. Sc. in the appropriate area as well as hold a valid GATE score

Ph. D. Programme 

Admission to the Ph. D. programme is generally made in both the semesters in a year, i.e., July and December. The advertisement is released by March/April and September each year respectively. The basic qualification for admission to the Ph. D. programme is Master's degree in Engineering, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences respectively or allied area(s). 

In addition to the basic educational qualifications prescribed in the appropriate area, one is required to have qualified GATE/UGC/CSIR examination for entry to Ph. D. For details see Research Admission Tests

Part-time Postgraduate Programmes 

The Institute also offers part-time postgraduate programmes leading to the M. Tech. & Ph. D. degree for the local (professionally) employed personnel such as working engineers, scientists and teachers who can regularly attend classes/courses.

Research in IIT Kanpur

Researchers at IIT Kanpur do high level research on a variety of subjects. The diversity of research projects undertaken by IITK is a measure of the strong track record of research at IITK. It is the result of the great synergy between the fundamental research and applied research done at IITK.

Interdisciplinary Research

A significant proportion of the research done at IITK is interdisciplinary. There are interdisciplinary academic programmes and interdisciplinary research centres & facilities at IITK.
