Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences (SHUATS)

The Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences (SHUATS) was created under Uttar Pradesh Act No. 35 of 2016, which was enacted by the Uttar Pradesh Legislature. SHUATS is formed and run by the Sam Higginbottom Educational and Charitable Society, an Ecumenical Minority Christian Society registered in Uttar Pradesh under the Society Registration Act of 1860. The University is a collaborative effort of the Christian community in India to promote rural life and development in accordance with the Christian vision of humanity and the creation. The University is held in trust as a shared ecumenical heritage by the country's Christian Churches and Christian Organisations.

Dr. Sam Higginbottom created the Allahabad Agricultural Institute (AAI) in 1910. On March 15, 2000, the Central Government issued notification No. F-9-26/94-U.3, declaring Allahabad Agricultural Institute as a Deemed University, based on the recommendations of the University Grants Commission and with the approval of the Hon'ble Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi. A proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi, to rename Allahabad Agricultural InstituteDeemed University the "Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences" in honour of the founder, Dr. Sam Higginbottom, who, through his sincere services, hard work, and dedication, made significant contributions to improving agriculture production in our country. In light of the aforementioned, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi vide communication bearing reference No. F.13- 7/2008-U.3.A, dated September 22, 2009 approved renaming of the Allahabad Agricultural Institute-Deemed University as: “SAM HIGGINBOTTOM INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE, TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCES” (Formerly Allahabad Agricultural Institute), (Deemed-to-be-University).

In 2016, after considering the adequate availability of teaching / non-teaching staff and other essential infrastructure facilities in the Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences - Deemed University (SHIATS), Allahabad, the Uttar Pradesh Legislature decided to upgrade, reconstitute and establish SHIATS as a full-fledged University under the State Act so as to ensure successive development of Agricultural Education, Research, Extension, Science, and Te The Uttar Pradesh Legislature was pleased to pass the Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences, Uttar Pradesh Bill of 2016, and the Hon'ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh kindly gave his assent to the Bill on December 27, 2016, resulting in the publication of the SHUATS Act No. 35 of 2016. Sam Higginbottom, University of Agriculture.  The Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences, Uttar Pradesh Act, 2016, was published in the official gazette under Notification No. 1867/79-V-1-16-1(ka)36-2016 on December 27, 2016.

The State Government of Uttar Pradesh confirmed that the Institute is a Minority Educational Institution under clause (i) of Article 30 of the Indian Constitution by letter no. 4894 15-80 (ii) dated September 12, 1980. The Institute was also recognised as a Minority Institution by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, New Delhi, on December 21, 2005, via D.O.No.F.20-71/2005-U.3. In 2013, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous agency of the University Grants Commission (UGC), awarded SHUATS with a "A Grade" (CGPA of 3.14 out of 4). In 2014, the MHRD, Government of India, ranked the university as "A". In 2009, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) recognised SHUATS, and in 2010, the Indian Council of Forest Research Education (ICFRE). SHUATS is also ISO 9001:2008 certified institution.

The University is a recognised member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Indian Agricultural Universities Association (IAUA), International Association of Universities (IAU), All India Association for Christian Higher Education (AIACHE), Association of Commonwealth Universities, Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI), Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture (GCHERA), and Trust for Advancement of Agriculture.
