The state of Uttar Pradesh in India has a rich history of education and learning. Uttar Pradesh is one state that can boast of being home to some of the premier institutes in India such as Banaras Hindu University. BHU is an internationally reputed university of learning created under the Parliamentary legislation - B.H.U. Act 1915. It was established in 1916 by Madan Mohan Malaviya. The foundation for the main campus of the university was laid by Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India, on Vasant Panchami 4 February 1916. Some other important institutes include Aligarh Muslim University, Forest Research Institute Kanpur, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, IIT Kanpur, IIM Lucknow to name a few.
It was from the beginning of the Vedic period in India that Uttar Pradesh was the chosen destination for education. Languages like Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic were first taught in this part of the country during the Gupta rule. Therefore, long before the British settled in India, Uttar Pradesh had established a name for itself as the education hub of the country. It was after the settlement of the British that the quality of education in Uttar Pradesh witnessed a decline as the state authorities could not match up to the western standards of education already followed in several other parts of the country. It took a long time for the Uttar Pradesh state government to improve the conditions of education within the state. It is only in the recent past that Uttar Pradesh has made significant progress in the field of education.
There are many prominent institutes in Uttar Pradesh that offers undergraduate, graduate, post graduate and doctoral degrees in a number of disciplines including basic sciences, mathematics, literature, economic sciences, material sciences, computer sciences, technology, engineering, and management. The research institutes, colleges as well as universities in UP run exclusively under the central government. Students from over the state and from across the country come to Uttar Pradesh to earn degrees from these colleges and universities.
